Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) unveiled the iPhone 18 lineup on Wednesday, led by the iPhone 18 Pro models powered by the new A20 Pro chip and its custom C2 cellular modem. The launch marks John Ternus’s first product reveal as CEO, emphasizing artificial intelligence integration and vertical supply chain integration.

Hardware and Chipset Upgrades

The iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max retain the design language of the previous year’s models but introduce Glacier and Burgundy color options. The devices are powered by the A20 Pro chip, which utilizes a 2nm manufacturing process from Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (NYSE: TSM). Apple describes the redesigned CPU cores as "desktop-class," aiming to deliver faster AI performance.

A significant shift in component sourcing is evident with the introduction of Apple’s new C2 cellular modem in the iPhone 18 Pro. This move reduces dependence on Qualcomm Inc. (NASDAQ: QCOM), which has supplied modems for years. However, U.S. specifications for the iPhone 18 Pro Max do not mention the C2, indicating it still uses a Qualcomm modem. Analysts suggest the split may stem from space constraints or supply issues, as the C2 is also used in the iPhone Duo.

Battery life is highlighted as a major improvement. The iPhone 18 Pro offers up to 36 hours of video playback, while the Pro Max delivers up to 45 hours. Both models feature the N1 chip for Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thread connectivity.

Software and AI Integration

Apple debuted its revamped Siri AI, which can perform actions within more than 300,000 installed apps, including third-party applications. The Dynamic Island now supports three simultaneous live activities. iOS 27 was also previewed, building on features revealed earlier in the year.

Camera and Accessories

The Pro camera system features a variable-aperture main camera with six laser-cut blades to control depth of field. Apple stated it filmed the entire launch event using the iPhone 18 Pro. New accessories include an upgraded clear case and new colors for existing cases and wrist straps.

Pricing and Availability

Preorders open on Sept. 12, with availability starting Sept. 18. The Apple Upgrade program begins at $34.99 per month for 24 months. Customers can receive up to $1,200 off when trading in an iPhone 14 or newer. A new AppleCare One Family option was also introduced.

What the Numbers Show

The divergence in modem technology between the Pro and Pro Max models highlights a transitional phase in Apple’s vertical integration strategy. While the C2 modem promises 15% lower energy consumption and faster uploads compared to the previous C1X, its absence in the larger Pro Max suggests that thermal or spatial constraints may currently limit its deployment across the entire high-end lineup.

Battery life reaches up to 20 hours with the case. The company claims these earbuds offer the best ANC in the industry for open-ear designs. Additional features include hands-free Siri access and Live Translation.

The higher-end version features a longer stem design similar to the AirPods Pro 3. It includes on-stem voice control and a wireless charging case.

Apple Watch Updates

Apple updated its smartwatch lineup with the Watch Ultra 4 and the Watch Series 12. Both devices utilize an all-new health sensing system. The electrode surface area has been increased to improve skin contact during ECG recordings.

The new watches can check heart rates 60 times more frequently than the previous generation. This capability is aided by more power-efficient green LEDs. Apple stated that tests show the new devices have the most accurate heart sensing in a wearable currently.

Both models are powered by the new S11 chip. The Watch Ultra 4 offers up to 50 hours of battery life on a single charge. This is an increase from the Watch Ultra 3’s 42 hours of battery life.
