Balance sheet expansion and asset quality
Total period-end deposits surged 27.1% YoY to ₹20,49,874 crore, while average deposits grew 21.2%. The CASA ratio stood at 35.8%, reflecting the impact of term deposit inflows. The loan book saw substantial growth across segments, with retail and rural loans comprising 51.6% of the total portfolio. The business banking portfolio expanded 33.8% YoY, and the domestic corporate portfolio grew 30.6%.
Asset quality metrics showed continued improvement. The net NPA ratio declined to 0.30% from 0.39% in Q2FY26. On a sequential basis, the gross NPA ratio improved to 1.20% from 1.38% in the previous quarter, while the net NPA ratio tightened to 0.30% from 0.35%. Gross NPA additions were ₹4,833 crore, lower than the previous year’s ₹5,034 crore. What the numbers show
A notable divergence exists between the aggressive balance sheet expansion and margin compression. While advances grew 30.0% and deposits 27.1%, the Net Interest Margin (NIM) contracted to 4.18% from 4.30% in Q2FY26. This suggests that the rapid loan growth may have come at a slightly lower yield or required higher-cost funding, although the absolute volume-driven NII growth remains strong. Additionally, the treasury segment posted a loss of ₹230 crore in Q2FY27 compared to a gain of ₹220 crore in Q2FY26, indicating market volatility impacted non-core earnings, yet the core operating profit growth remained resilient at over 20%.
