Lyft and Curb have expanded their strategic partnership to New York City, the largest taxi market in the United States, to provide eligible riders access to licensed taxis through the Lyft app. This integration utilizes Curb Flow, Curb’s open API that aggregates ride demand into a single network, connecting thousands of cab drivers on the Curb network to millions of Lyft riders in the city. The move marks Lyft’s largest deployment of the Curb integration to date and creates a new earning opportunity for New York City taxi drivers.
The expansion follows previous launches in Los Angeles and San Francisco and represents the first time Lyft riders in New York City can access licensed taxis via the app. Riders requesting a Standard, Priority Pickup, or Wait & Save ride may be matched with a licensed taxi when one is nearby. Riders who prefer not to be matched with a taxi can adjust their preferences in the app. All rides will maintain the standard Lyft experience, including upfront pricing, driver and vehicle information, in-app safety features, and the ability to tip and rate the driver.
Lyft’s full suite of safety and rider features, such as real-time location sharing, in-app chat, Smart Trip Check-In, and emergency assistance, will be available on all taxi rides. Taxi drivers in the Curb network are subject to the same service standards as other drivers on the Lyft platform. Jeremy Bird, EVP of Global Growth at Lyft, stated that the expansion connects a community of professional drivers to millions of riders, facilitating easier transportation for New Yorkers.
Dorel Tamam, Vice President, Mobile Business Unit at Curb, highlighted that New York City is the heart of the American taxi industry. He noted that Curb Flow was designed to unify the fragmented ride-hailing experience and that integrating Lyft into the network in New York City is a significant milestone for both drivers and riders. The partnership aligns with Lyft’s strategy to expand transportation options through collaborations with established, licensed operators.
