Federal Bank reported a 45% year-on-year increase in standalone net profit for the quarter ended September 30, 2026. The bank’s consolidated net profit also surged 51% to ₹1,499 crore, reflecting robust operational performance across its franchise.

The disclosure follows the bank's announcement of a strong quarter driven by interest income and fee growth. The call held on October 16, 2026, provided detailed insights into the unaudited financial results, which exceeded market expectations.

Financial Performance

The bank’s total income for the quarter stood at ₹9,211 crore on a standalone basis, reflecting an 18% growth from ₹7,824 crore recorded a year ago. Consolidated total income grew 19% to ₹9,903 crore. Net Interest Income (NII) grew significantly to ₹3,153 crore, up 26% YoY from ₹2,495 crore. Other income contributed ₹1,490 crore, a 38% YoY increase, with fee income alone rising 32% to ₹1,168 crore. The strong bottom-line performance highlights improved operational efficiency, with the Cost-to-Income ratio improving to 52.08% from 54.04% in Q2FY26.

Metric Q2FY27 Q2FY26 Change
Standalone Net Profit ₹1,386 crore ₹955 crore +45%
Consolidated Net Profit ₹1,499 crore ₹992 crore +51%
Standalone Total Income ₹9,211 crore ₹7,824 crore +18%
Net Interest Income ₹3,153 crore ₹2,495 crore +26%
Gross NPA 1.32% 1.83% -51 bps
Net NPA 0.17% 0.48% -31 bps
Cost to Income Ratio 52.08% 54.04% -196 bps

Asset Quality Metrics

The bank demonstrated continued improvement in its loan book health. Gross Non-Performing Assets (GNPA) declined to 1.32% in the second quarter, down from 1.52% in the previous quarter and 1.83% a year ago. This represents a reduction of 20 basis points on a sequential basis and marks a decadal best for the bank.

Similarly, Net Non-Performing Assets (NNPA) tightened to 0.17%, compared to 0.18% in the preceding quarter and 0.48% in the year-ago period. The Provision Coverage Ratio (PCR), excluding Technical Write-offs (TWO), stood at 86.78%, up from 73.45% in Q2FY26. Credit costs moderated to 31 bps in Q2FY27 from 50 bps in Q2FY26.

Fresh Slippages

Despite the improvement in NPA ratios, fresh slippages increased marginally to ₹420 crore in Q2FY27 from ₹409 crore in the previous quarter. However, on a year-on-year basis, slippages declined significantly from ₹579 crore in Q2FY26. The slight sequential uptick occurred even as the overall GNPA ratio contracted, suggesting that recoveries and write-offs helped offset the marginal rise in new defaults during the quarter.

Segment Performance

Retail banking remained the largest contributor to revenue, with segment revenue rising to ₹864.5 crore in Q2FY27 from ₹784.1 crore a year ago. Corporate/Wholesale banking revenue increased to ₹380.4 crore, while Treasury operations generated ₹173.7 crore. Retail banking’s profit before tax surged to ₹67.3 crore from ₹24.2 crore in the same quarter last year, driven by improved asset quality and lower provisions.

The bank’s business franchise crossed ₹6.4 lakh crore, a 20% YoY growth. Average CASA crossed ₹1 lakh crore, growing 21% YoY, while customer assets crossed ₹3 lakh crore, a 20% YoY increase. Gold loans grew 37% YoY to ₹44,242 crore, and credit card spends rose 28% YoY.

Accounting Policy Change

During the quarter, the bank changed its accounting policy for Employee Stock Option Schemes (ESOS) from the Intrinsic Value Method to the Fair Value Method, effective April 1, 2026. This change resulted in an increase in employee costs by ₹32.7 crore and a reduction in profit after tax by ₹24.5 crore for the half year ended September 30, 2026.

What the Numbers Show

A notable divergence exists between the magnitude of profit growth and revenue expansion. While total income grew by approximately 18% year-on-year, net profit surged by roughly 45%. This disproportionate rise in profitability suggests that the improvement was driven by factors beyond top-line growth, such as lower credit costs reflected in the declining NPA ratios or improved operating leverage. Additionally, while GNPA ratios improved sequentially, fresh slippages rose marginally to ₹420 crore from ₹409 crore, indicating that the balance sheet cleanup was driven by aggressive resolution rather than a complete halt in new defaults. The beat against the consensus estimate further underscores the strength of the quarter’s financial execution, particularly in fee income which grew faster than interest income.
