Investa , the FCA-regulated options trading app, has introduced free U.S. share trading for UK customers, removing commissions and foreign exchange fees.
The platform, which has raised £3.8 million from over 1,000 investors, is now available on Android via the Google Play Store and iOS. This move positions Investa as the first UK-based platform to offer completely fee-free access to U.S. equities, extending its existing zero-commission model for options contracts.
Fee structure and limits
While trading is free of charge, users are subject to an annual fair usage policy per account. The service remains free provided the customer does not exceed any of the following thresholds:
| Limit Type | Annual Cap |
|---|---|
| Total Trade Value | £250,000 |
| Number of Trades | 50 |
| Shares Traded | 5,000 |
Whichever limit is reached first triggers the end of the free tier for that account year.
Strategic context
The launch builds on the broader industry shift toward zero-commission trading but differentiates itself by eliminating ancillary costs such as FX fees, which typically accompany this model. Investa already allows customers to trade over 300,000 options contracts across popular U.S. stocks and ETFs without commission, though other fees may apply to those products.
Announced at the Investa x Cboe Global Markets event on September 17, the new service follows the recent rollout of a rewards programme. Eligible early users were granted options on up to £1,000 worth of Investa shares, allowing them to benefit from the company’s future growth. A referral programme is also set to launch, running until October 31, 2026, offering options on £100 worth of shares to both referrers and referees who meet eligibility criteria.
What the numbers show
The company’s funding trajectory highlights strong retail investor interest in its model. Investa raised £3.8 million from more than 1,000 investors, with its initial crowdfunding campaign on Crowdcube closing six days ahead of schedule. This raise was recorded as the most participated-in UK fintech campaign on the platform in 2024, suggesting a high level of community engagement that the new referral and reward structures aim to leverage further.
Alec Beasley, CEO of Investa, stated that the initiative aims to remove barriers to both stock and options trading in the UK, providing customers with more strategies and ways to trade.
