MiniMed has commercially launched the MiniMed 780G system integrated with the Instinct sensor and the MiniMed Go system integrated with the Instinct Go sensor in Europe. The Instinct and Instinct Go sensors, made by Abbott, are being rolled out gradually across European markets starting this month. This expansion allows more people with diabetes to access advanced technology while maintaining proven clinical performance.

The MiniMed 780G system features Meal Detection technology designed to reduce post-meal blood glucose spikes when users occasionally forget to bolus or underestimate carbs. Paired with the 15-day Instinct sensor, which is described as the world's smallest, thinnest, and most discreet sensor, the system offers greater flexibility. A randomized crossover study published in Diabetes Technology & Therapeutics demonstrated that glycemic outcomes were virtually identical when using the MiniMed 780G system with either the Simplera Sync sensor or Instinct sensor.

Clinical and real-world evidence indicates the MiniMed 780G system can help people with type 1 diabetes achieve consistent glycemic control. Many users achieve 80% Time in Range (TIR) when using optimal settings, substantially exceeding ADA and international consensus guidelines of 70% TIR. A separate real-world study of 8,019 U.S. users demonstrated that the system delivered 91% overnight Time in Range.

For users managing diabetes with multiple daily injections (MDI), the MiniMed Go system integrates the Instinct Go sensor with the InPen smart insulin pen. This solution combines dose tracking with real-time CGM data to address therapy adherence gaps. It provides real-time alerts and actionable insights on a single mobile app when doses are missed or blood glucose spikes occur.

The integration of the Instinct sensor with MiniMed systems follows CE mark approval earlier this year. Professor Amir Tirosh of Sheba Medical Center and Tel-Aviv University noted that the integration allows more people to access advanced diabetes technology in a way that works for them while still benefiting from proven algorithms and clinical outcomes.

MiniMed announced the commercial launch of the MiniMed Flex system in the United States, introducing its first app-controlled insulin pump and the smallest device in its portfolio. The system is designed to offer clinical performance while integrating into users' lifestyles through smartphone control. It launches alongside the Simplera Sync sensor, a disposable all-in-one sensor with a two-step insertion process.

The MiniMed Flex system is powered by the SmartGuard algorithm, which features Meal Detection technology to address rapid rises in sensor glucose. The system automatically adjusts and autocorrects insulin delivery every 5 minutes based on real-time readings from the Simplera Sync sensor. Real-world results indicate an 80% Time in Range (TIR) with recommended settings, exceeding worldwide recommendations.

Key Features and Specifications

The device is approximately half the size of the MiniMed 780G pump while maintaining a 300-unit insulin capacity. It is compatible with the Extended infusion set, allowing for up to seven days of wear. This compatibility can result in up to 96% fewer injections compared to traditional insulin therapy, which assumes four injections per day for 30 days.

Regulatory Approval and Availability

The MiniMed Flex system is FDA cleared for individuals with type 1 diabetes aged 7 years and older, as well as adults aged 18 years and older with insulin-requiring type 2 diabetes. A version of the system paired with the Instinct sensor, made by Abbott, is currently investigational and not commercially available in the U.S.
