Honda Marine has secured the title sponsorship of The 2026 Great Loop Challenge powered by Honda Marine, an ultra-endurance marine marathon spanning over 7,300 nautical miles to support pediatric cancer research. Launching on August 8, 2026, at 12:00 PM ET from Lake Beresford Yacht Club in DeLand, Florida, the mission-driven effort aims to raise funds and awareness for the National Pediatric Cancer Foundation (NPCF). Honda Marine is contributing $10,000 directly to the initiative, reinforcing its commitment to innovation with purpose and community impact.
The challenge will be led by cancer survivor Captain Scott "Red" Flowers and his crew, who plan to operate 24/7 aboard a custom Portā DARK:30 Velocity boat. The vessel is powered by twin Honda BF350 V8 high-power outboards, providing a real-world test of the engines' efficiency, durability, and long-range reliability under extreme conditions. This year’s expanded route adds distance and open-water exposure compared to the 2024 run, which covered 6,500 nautical miles in 19 days.
"At Honda, we believe high performance means more when it serves a purpose," said Josh Matthews, Director, Honda Marine Division. "The 2026 Great Loop Challenge powered by Honda Marine gives us the chance to demonstrate the endurance, efficiency and reliability of Honda BF350 outboards in a true real-world test—while helping raise funds and awareness for pediatric cancer research through the National Pediatric Cancer Foundation."
The partnership involves several key collaborators, including Scott Portā, President and Founder of Portā Products, and Jim "Slim" Berns, Vice President of Operations at Sharrow Marine. The crew will stop only for fuel, routine maintenance, fundraising activities, weather, or safety concerns before returning to Lake Beresford Yacht Club.

What the Numbers Show
The expansion of the route from 6,500 nautical miles in 2024 to over 7,300 nautical miles in 2026 represents a significant increase in operational complexity and endurance requirements. In 2024, Captain Flowers and his crew raised $450,000 for NPCF during their 19-day, 19-hour, and 50-minute run. The 2026 challenge aims to build on this momentum by leveraging the advanced performance of the Honda BF350 V8 outboards, which combine acceleration and top-end performance with fuel efficiency, quiet operation, low vibration, and reliability. These attributes are critical for maintaining consistent performance across thousands of miles and changing conditions.
Planned stops along the route include Deland, Jacksonville, Key West, and Tampa, Florida; Wilmington, North Carolina; Portland, Maine; Halifax, Nova Scotia; Cleveland, Ohio; and St. Clair Shores, Michigan. The campaign will continue into September, National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, through NPCF activities. Honda Marine also plans to showcase the Portā DARK:30 Velocity at IBEX 2026, October 6–8, at the Tampa Convention Center.
