Dr. Agarwal's Health Care launched the world’s first dedicated Pinhole Pupilloplasty (PPP) Centre at its flagship Alwarpet facility in Chennai on August 27, 2026. The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, Thiru C. Joseph Vijay, inaugurated the centre.
The subsidiary, Dr. Agarwal's Eye Hospital Limited (AEHL), developed the facility to address complex corneal disorders without requiring donor tissue. Dr. Amar Agarwal, Chairman and Managing Director, and Dr. Manoj Khatri, Director – Vitreo-Retinal Services, were present at the event.
Clinical Innovation
The centre utilizes the Pinhole Pupilloplasty technique, developed by Dr. Amar Agarwal. This microsurgical procedure creates a small, precisely centred pupillary aperture to block scattered light rays. It improves functional vision for patients with corneal scars, irregular corneas, and high optical aberrations.
The procedure preserves the natural cornea, addressing the global shortage of donor tissue. A landmark international survey cited in the release noted that approximately 12.7 million people worldwide await corneal transplantation. Only one donor cornea is available for every 70 people in need. The survey further reported that approximately 185,000 corneal transplants were performed annually across 116 countries.
Patient Impact and Training
The hospital reports that the procedure has provided vision to over 5000 patients so far. The new centre will serve as a comprehensive programme encompassing diagnostics, surgery, research, and training.
More than 50 ophthalmologists undergo training through workshops and academic programmes every year. The facility aims to teach specialists how to identify appropriate candidates for this tissue-preserving solution.
Community Initiatives
The launch coincides with the 41st National Eye Donation Fortnight. Earlier, to mark the birthday of Chief Minister Thiru C. Joseph Vijay, the hospital screened more than 16,000 schoolchildren across Tamil Nadu in a single day.
Dr. Manoj Khatri stated that innovation becomes meaningful when it changes a patient’s everyday life. The centre represents a step towards restoring useful vision while preserving precious donor tissue for those who need it most.
