Colgate-Palmolive (India) Limited announced that its PerioGard gum care portfolio has become the first in India to receive the Indian Society of Periodontology (ISP) Seal of Acceptance. The recognition validates the safety and efficacy of the brand’s toothpaste, toothbrush, and mouthwash system after rigorous scientific evaluation by the professional body.

The ISP Seal is awarded only following stringent assessment of product safety and efficacy. By earning this distinction, Colgate-Palmolive (India) Limited establishes a new national benchmark for validated gum health solutions. The company stated the move underscores its commitment to advancing solution-oriented care through clinical innovation.

Clinical Context and Market Awareness

Company executives highlighted that gum health remains under-prioritized despite its critical role in overall wellness. Clinical research links poor gum health to systemic conditions including cardiovascular disease, diabetes complications, and adverse pregnancy outcomes.

Mr. Gunjit Jain, EVP Marketing at Colgate-Palmolive (India) Limited, noted that more than half the population suffers from a gum problem, yet only one in 10 individuals realize it. He explained that the condition often manifests through multiple subtle signs rather than one obvious symptom. The PerioGard system is designed to address five specific signs: sensitive gums, gum redness, gum irritation, bad breath, and plaque.

Leadership Commentary

Ms. Prabha Narasimhan, Managing Director of Colgate-Palmolive (India) Limited, stated that healthier gums are the foundation of a healthier mouth. She described the independent validation as a reflection of the company’s mission to elevate oral care standards in India and empower consumers to make proactive choices.

Dr. Ashish Jain, Secretary of the Indian Society of Periodontology, said the seal helps consumers and dental professionals identify products meeting rigorous standards. He emphasized the shared commitment to evidence-based periodontal health reflected in the recognition.

What the Numbers Show

The marketing data cited by the company reveals a significant awareness gap in the oral care sector. With over 50% of the population affected by gum issues but only 10% aware of their condition, there is a 40-percentage-point disparity between prevalence and consumer recognition. This gap suggests substantial potential for education-led market expansion within the gum care category.
