Nokia Corporation (NYSE: NOK) shares rose nearly 6% in Wednesday’s premarket session to $10.41. The move follows announcements of expanded AI-RAN trials with global operators and a new defense partnership.
Stock Performance and Technicals
Nasdaq futures gained 0.56%, while S&P 500 futures rose 0.34%. Nokia is trading 2.1% above its 20-day SMA of $10.24 and 2% above its 50-day SMA of $10.25. However, the stock remains 13.1% below its 100-day SMA of $12.02 and sits 7.3% above its 200-day SMA of $9.74.
Momentum indicators show improvement, with the MACD above its signal line and a positive histogram. Resistance is near $10.50, close to the 50-day EMA of $10.58, while support holds around $9.50 near the 200-day SMA zone.
AI-RAN Expansion
Nokia announced that more global telecom operators are advancing AI-RAN trials using the NVIDIA Aerial RAN Computer. Partners including A1 Group, Chunghwa Telecom, du, e&, Mobily, stc, TPG Telecom, and Zain Saudi are moving from early evaluation to live field trials. Trials with NTT DOCOMO, INC. continue to progress.
The AI-RAN platform has delivered more than 20% improvements in spectral efficiency. Nokia outlined a software innovation roadmap extending through 2027 and 2028 to drive further gains, aiming to reduce reliance on traditional hardware refresh cycles.
Defense Partnership
Separately, Nokia Defense signed an agreement with C3IA to support the digital transformation of U.K. defense operations. The collaboration will focus on secure communications, private 4G and 5G, command and control, sensing, autonomous systems, and edge computing.
Analyst Outlook
Nokia carries a Buy consensus rating with an average price forecast of $17. Rosenblatt initiated coverage Tuesday with a Buy rating and $15 price target. JPMorgan maintains an Overweight rating with a $21 price target, while Argus Research upgraded the stock to Buy in April with a $15 forecast.
What the Numbers Show
The stock’s technical setup presents a mixed signal: while short-term momentum is positive (MACD above signal), the 20-day SMA remains below the 50-day SMA. This divergence suggests that while immediate buying pressure exists, the longer-term trend reversal confirmed by the October 2025 golden cross (50-day above 200-day) faces resistance at the $10.50 level.
How might the transition of AI-RAN trials from evaluation to live field trials impact Nokia's near-term revenue recognition and hardware sales cycles?
Could the reported 20% improvement in spectral efficiency accelerate the adoption of AI-RAN among operators, potentially disrupting traditional telecom equipment refresh timelines?
What are the potential regulatory or security hurdles Nokia may face in expanding its defense partnership with C3IA for U.K. military operations?
