Interactive Brokers opens AI connectivity to any tool built on MCP
Interactive Brokers Group, Inc. has launched expanded AI connectivity allowing clients to link accounts to any tool built on the Model Context Protocol (MCP). This update extends beyond previous limitations to ChatGPT, Claude, and Grok, now including support for Claude Code, Cursor, Perplexity, and Windsurf. The integration enables secure, natural language-based portfolio analysis and trade drafting, with client approval required before order execution. The feature works across all major IBKR platforms and complements existing native AI tools like AI Screeners and Ask IBKR.

Interactive Brokers Group, Inc. (NASDAQ: IBKR) has expanded its artificial intelligence capabilities by enabling clients to connect their brokerage accounts to any AI tool built on the Model Context Protocol (MCP) standard. This development allows investors to utilize the AI applications they already prefer for portfolio management and investment research, rather than being restricted to specific certified marketplaces. The move strengthens the broker’s position in automated global trading by offering greater flexibility in how clients interact with their account data through third-party AI interfaces.
Previously, Interactive Brokers’ AI Integration was limited to connections via the certified marketplaces for ChatGPT, Claude, and Grok. With this update, clients can now connect from a broader ecosystem of MCP-compatible tools, including Claude Code, Cursor, Perplexity, and Windsurf. Milan Galik, Chief Executive Officer of Interactive Brokers, stated that supporting AI tools built on MCP is a natural extension of the company’s long-standing philosophy of offering open APIs. He noted that this approach gives clients the flexibility to use their preferred applications to research investments, manage portfolios, and interact with their IBKR accounts securely.
The AI Integration leverages the MCP standard, which has become the common protocol for connecting AI applications to outside services. Built on this foundation since its launch, the integration provides secure access to account data. Clients can use connected AI tools to analyze portfolios, research investments, monitor risk, and draft trade instructions using natural language. Crucially, the system maintains client control: the AI analyzes the portfolio and drafts instructions, but the client must review each instruction and convert it to an order on an Interactive Brokers platform before submission. Clients also control what data the AI can access.
Users can ask their connected AI tools specific questions about their portfolios, such as assessing sensitivity to interest rate rises, identifying volatile holdings based on implied volatility and 52-week ranges, or evaluating currency impact if the U.S. dollar weakens against foreign exposures. The integration also supports scenario analysis, such as determining portfolio effects if the S&P 500 fell 10 percent and suggesting strategies to manage that risk.
Supported Tools and Connection Process
Clients can link their accounts through different methods depending on the tool used. For ChatGPT, Claude, or Grok, users connect via each platform’s certified connector marketplace. For other MCP-compatible tools, clients must use the tool’s “add MCP server” or “custom connector” setting, enter the Interactive Brokers connector URL, log in through the secure screen, and authorize access for a single account. Support for Gemini is scheduled to launch soon.
| Tool Category | Examples | Connection Method |
|---|---|---|
| Certified Marketplaces | ChatGPT, Claude, Grok | Platform’s certified connector marketplace |
| MCP-Compatible Tools | Claude Code, Cursor, Perplexity, Windsurf | “Add MCP server” or custom connector setting |
| Upcoming Support | Gemini | Information insufficient |
Existing AI Ecosystem
The new MCP connectivity complements Interactive Brokers’ existing suite of AI-powered tools available directly within its platforms, including Client Portal, IBKR Desktop, IBKR GlobalTrader, IBKR Mobile, and Trader Workstation. These native tools include AI Screeners, which allow natural language searches across more than 70,000 global stocks; Investment Themes, which map connected companies and trends for topics like clean energy; and Connections, which display related companies, sector ETFs, and derivatives for any stock. Additionally, Ask IBKR enables natural language queries about portfolio concentration, while AI News Summaries provide concise recaps of market news filtered to specific portfolios and watch lists.
What the Numbers Show
The expansion to MCP signifies a strategic shift toward interoperability rather than proprietary lock-in. By adopting an open standard like MCP, Interactive Brokers reduces friction for tech-savvy investors who already use developer-focused AI tools like Cursor or Windsurf. This aligns with the firm’s broader emphasis on automation and technology, positioning it to capture users who prioritize flexible, API-driven workflows over closed-loop ecosystems.
How might Interactive Brokers' adoption of the open MCP standard impact its competitive positioning against proprietary AI ecosystems offered by rivals like Charles Schwab or Fidelity?
What are the potential regulatory or compliance risks associated with allowing third-party AI tools to access sensitive portfolio data and draft trade instructions?
Could the shift toward developer-focused tools like Cursor and Windsurf alienate retail investors who prefer simpler, guided interfaces, thereby narrowing IBKR's target demographic?
