Cloudflare, Inc. (NYSE: NET) announced the launch of Cloudflare Wallets and cloudflare.pay, a suite of tools designed to provide stable identities and secure payment infrastructure for autonomous AI agents. The release aims to resolve critical trust and verification issues in agentic commerce, allowing businesses to identify the human or organization behind an agent and enabling agents to make purchases within strict limits set by their creators.
The Internet’s architecture was originally built for human interaction, leaving businesses unable to reliably distinguish between legitimate AI assistants and malicious bots when transactions occur. As AI agents increasingly browse websites, query APIs, and make purchases autonomously, this lack of identity verification forces companies to choose between restrictive security measures and unchecked risk. Cloudflare’s new solution provides the foundational building blocks for secure, two-sided agentic commerce by linking agents to verifiable owners.
"The Internet is shifting from human-driven browsing to agent-driven commerce, and the infrastructure needs to keep up," said Matthew Prince, co-founder and CEO of Cloudflare. "When an agent shows up at your door, you need to know who sent it. Cloudflare can give agents a face—a link to the human or organization that owns them—so that trust, accountability, and real commerce can follow."
Identity and Payment Mechanics
Cloudflare Wallets address the identity and payment challenges through two primary components. First, each Cloudflare account receives a unique web address serving as a stable ID, which can be extended to specific agents so receiving businesses can verify authorization. Second, the "Account Wallet" functions as a central balance for receiving, holding, and managing stablecoins.
Users can assign "Virtual Wallets" to individual agents, enabling them to spend on online resources with built-in guardrails. These controls include spending caps, approved merchant lists, and maximum transaction sizes that agents cannot exceed independently. Paired with the Monetization Gateway, these features complete the infrastructure for agentic payments.
| Feature | Function | Control Mechanism |
|---|---|---|
| Stable ID | Unique web address for accounts | Links agent to owner |
| Account Wallet | Central balance management | Holds stablecoins |
| Virtual Wallets | Agent-specific spending | Spending caps, merchant lists |
Availability and Roadmap
Cloudflare Wallet handle reservation is open today. Full wallet access, including the ability to onramp and offramp funds and issue Virtual Wallets, will be available in the coming months. Users can claim handles at cloudflare.pay to be notified when access opens.
What the Numbers Show
While no financial metrics were disclosed for this product launch, the strategic implication is significant for Cloudflare’s position in the connectivity cloud market. By integrating identity verification directly into payment flows, Cloudflare moves beyond traditional security roles to become a core infrastructure provider for the emerging economy of autonomous software interactions.
How might the adoption of Cloudflare Wallets influence the competitive landscape among other cloud infrastructure providers seeking to capture the agentic commerce market?
What regulatory challenges could arise regarding liability and compliance when autonomous agents execute transactions using stablecoins under strict spending caps?
Will major e-commerce platforms and API providers integrate Cloudflare's identity verification standards as a prerequisite for accepting agent-driven transactions?
