India's artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure is poised for a significant boost, with GPU capacity projected to exceed 100,000 units in the next year and a half, according to Sunil Gupta, Co-Founder and CEO of Yotta Data Services.

AI Mission Drives GPU Demand

The India AI mission has successfully aggregated 38,000 GPUs through public-private partnerships, marking a substantial increase in the country's compute capacity. However, the demand for these critical AI components far outstrips the current supply. Gupta revealed that over 500 proposals for training language models are in the pipeline, requiring between 100,000 to 200,000 GPUs.

Yotta's Strategic Partnership with Nvidia

In a move to address this growing demand, Yotta Data Services partnered with Nvidia in late 2023. The collaboration bore fruit in March 2024 when Yotta launched its first batch of GPUs. This initiative positions Yotta as one of only six global providers operating on NVIDIA's reference architecture, highlighting the company's strategic role in India's AI infrastructure development.

Rapid Growth in Data Center Capacity

The surge in GPU demand is paralleled by a dramatic expansion of India's data center capacity. Gupta noted that the country's data center capacity has grown from a modest 200 MW until 2017 to a substantial 1.40 GW currently. Industry projections suggest this figure could reach at least 3.00 GW by 2030, underscoring the rapid pace of digital infrastructure development in India.

Future Projections and Challenges

Despite the impressive growth, Gupta suggests that India's data center capacity needs could be even greater. Drawing comparisons with US benchmarks and considering India's population, he posits that the country might require up to 50 times more capacity than current projections.

This anticipated need is driven by the adoption of population-scale digital services, which will require substantial inference capabilities to support applications serving tens of millions of users. The challenge lies in rapidly scaling up the infrastructure to meet this burgeoning demand.
