High-level officials underscored Hong Kong's role as a "super connector" between the Chinese mainland and global markets during the Greater Bay Area Conference 2026 held in the city on Thursday.

The event, co-organized by China Daily and the Hong Kong Coalition, brought together nearly 300 government officials, consuls general, business leaders, and experts from across Asia. Keynote speakers emphasized the region's integration amid shifting geopolitical and technological landscapes.

Strategic Connectivity and Policy Frameworks

Leung Chun-ying, vice-chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, highlighted recent collaborative initiatives in data and healthcare between Hong Kong and Nansha in Guangzhou. He stated these steps underscore Hong Kong's unique position as a partner linking the Greater Bay Area with the rest of the world.

Hong Kong SAR Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu delivered a video address, noting that the region is becoming one of the most dynamic economic powerhouses globally. He pointed to two major upcoming events: the APEC Finance Ministers’ Meeting in October and the 33rd Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Economic Leaders’ Meeting in Shenzhen in November.

Lee emphasized that Hong Kong’s deep liquid markets and financial talent pool support its status as Asia’s premier fundraising and asset management hub. He also highlighted the Hetao Shenzhen-Hong Kong Science and Technology Innovation Cooperation Zone as a key mechanism for converting research into products by combining local research excellence with mainland manufacturing capabilities.

Sectoral Focus and Future Outlook

Financial Secretary Paul Chan Mo-po stressed connectivity in an era of geopolitical change, stating that partnership in the Greater Bay Area multiplies strengths beyond Asia. The conference featured panel discussions on financial opportunities in the Asia-Pacific landscape, commercial aerospace synergy with Shenzhen, and AI in education.

Qu Yingpu, publisher and editor-in-chief of China Daily, noted that Hong Kong is recording a new era of transformation aligned with national rejuvenation. He referenced the upcoming publication of Hong Kong's first five-year plan on Sept 16 as a milestone for future innovation.
