Global electric vehicle sales reached 2 million units in June 2026, driven by a 31% surge in Europe, while markets in China and North America experienced declines. Year-to-date sales clocked in at 9.6 million units from January to June, according to data from Benchmark Intelligence cited in an Electrek report. The regional divergence highlights shifting dynamics in the global EV landscape, with Europe gaining momentum despite headwinds in other major markets.
Regional Performance
Europe led the growth with approximately 530,000 units sold in June, a 31% increase compared to June 2025. The region sold 2.5 million EVs during the first six months of the year. In contrast, North America saw sales plunge 20% during the first half of the year to 730,000 units. June sales in the region totaled 130,000 EVs, down 13% year-over-year from June 2025.
The decline in North America was attributed to the sunsetting of the $7,500 Federal EV credit in the U.S. and pro-gasoline policies. However, Canada's tariff agreement with China allowed the Geely Automobile Holdings Ltd.-backed Lotus Eletre to debut in the market.
China Market Trends
China, the leader in EV adoption, sold 1 million EVs in June, an 11% year-over-year decline. Year-to-date sales reached 4.9 million units, down 14% compared to the same period last year. Despite the domestic market contraction, Chinese automakers exported a record 500,000 New Energy Vehicle units overseas in June.
| Region | June Sales | YoY Change | YTD Sales |

Tesla Model Y Performance
Tesla Inc.'s Model Y became the best-selling vehicle in China in June, with sales exceeding 38,000 units. The model reclaimed the top spot after selling 39,827 units in March 2026. Tesla also unveiled the U.S.-spec Model Y L, priced at $61,990, with deliveries expected around September. The launch includes a free 12-month subscription for Supervised Full Self-Driving.
