Ouster, Inc. has launched BlueCity, a traffic management solution powered by its new Rev8 digital lidar, featuring native color detection and up to double the range of previous models. The solution combines 3D lidar with proprietary AI detection for intersection and highway multimodal actuation, alerts, and analytics. It is currently the industry's most widely deployed lidar-based traffic management solution, with over 700 contracted site deployments, including the three largest deployments in the United States to date.
The integration of Rev8 introduces the world's first native color lidar detection system, capturing both color and 3D depth information without complex calibration. This capability provides high-fidelity digital traffic twins, simplified zone set-up, and intuitive event analysis. The solution is designed with system-level privacy features at the edge. The Rev8 sensor has a planned 10-year production life, ensuring long-term stability for public infrastructure projects.
Stamford Deployment
The City of Stamford, Connecticut has installed Ouster BlueCity with Rev8 native color, enabling 360° corridor-level detection to optimize traffic flow and reduce vehicle idle times. The solution uses precise geolocation detection for data-led decision making and faster interventions for safety events such as near-misses, speeding, and outside-of-crosswalk events. This deployment follows successful installations by the Connecticut Department of Transportation and New England Traffic Solutions earlier this year.
"Ouster BlueCity with Rev8 lidar sensors allows us to take a massive leap forward in our transportation infrastructure," said Stephen Frycz, Transportation Manager, City of Stamford, CT. "We're excited to be the first in the nation to deploy this cutting-edge technology."
Solution Specifications
Ouster BlueCity with Rev8 offers advanced multimodal detection, continuous 360° detection of road users up to 500 ft, and 99% stop-bar detection accuracy. The system integrates with existing traffic controllers and ATMS platforms via an open API architecture.
| Feature | Specification |
|---|---|
| Detection Range | Up to 500 ft |
| Stop-bar Detection Accuracy | 99% |
| Operating Temperature | -40°C to +85°C |
| Production Life | 10 years |
| Environmental Rating | IP68/69K |
The system consolidates hardware and software into a single unit, replacing multiple cameras, radars, and inductive loops with one or two lidar sensors. It mounts to existing infrastructure in as little as 3 hours and is BABA certified, complying with NEMA TS2 and relevant cybersecurity requirements.
How will the introduction of native color lidar detection influence Ouster's competitive positioning against traditional camera and radar-based traffic systems?
What are the potential revenue implications for Ouster given the 10-year production life commitment for the Rev8 sensor in public infrastructure?
Could the success of the Stamford deployment accelerate adoption rates in other major metropolitan areas facing similar traffic management challenges?
