Newmont Corporation (NYSE: NEM) shares rose 3.08% to $131.57 in premarket trading on Friday, buoyed by record-high gold prices and a strategic board appointment.
Spot gold traded above $4,500 an ounce, marking a third consecutive weekly gain. Investors sought safe-haven assets amid volatility in currency and bond markets, while higher oil prices fueled inflation concerns. Gold jumped more than 4% on Wednesday after the U.S. Treasury Department announced plans to double its long-term debt buybacks. Central bank purchases, particularly from China, and strong investment demand provided additional support.
Higher bullion prices benefit miners such as Newmont by increasing the value of production and potentially boosting margins and cash flow.
Board Appointment
Newmont announced Thursday that it appointed Peter Beaven to its Board of Directors, effective Sept. 1, 2026. Mr. Beaven is expected to serve on the Audit Committee, bringing additional finance and global mining experience to the company’s governance structure.
Mr. Beaven served as Group Chief Financial Officer of BHP from 2015 to 2021. During his tenure, he oversaw BHP’s global finance function, including strategy, mergers and acquisitions, capital allocation, risk management and investor relations. His career includes senior operational roles across copper, base metals, manganese and carbon steel materials. He previously served as Non-Executive Chair of the International Copper Association.
Greg Boyce, Chair of Newmont’s Board of Directors, welcomed Mr. Beaven as an acknowledged extractive industry leader. Natascha Viljoen, President and Chief Executive Officer at Newmont, highlighted Mr. Beaven’s financial and strategic expertise, noting its value as Newmont focuses on disciplined portfolio management and long-term sustainable value creation.

How might the U.S. Treasury's plan to double long-term debt buybacks impact long-term interest rates and gold's appeal as a non-yielding asset?
Could Newmont's overbought RSI of 73.84 and proximity to the $132 resistance level trigger a short-term technical pullback despite strong fundamentals?
What specific strategic initiatives or capital allocation changes might Peter Beaven prioritize given his background in M&A and disciplined portfolio management?
