Passenger vehicles lead output growth

Passenger vehicle production climbed to 217,881 units in August 2026 from 155,238 units in August 2025, reflecting a substantial year-on-year increase. Passenger vehicles constituted the dominant share of Maruti Suzuki's overall production in both periods.

Segment-wise breakdown

The new data provides a detailed breakdown of production by segment and model. Utility Vehicles saw the most significant absolute growth, rising to 97,922 units from 58,587 units a year earlier. This segment includes models such as the Brezza, Ertiga, e Vitara, Fronx, Jimmy, Victoris, XL6, and OEM Models.

Passenger cars, comprising Mini and Compact segments, produced 107,400 units in August 2026 compared to 85,408 units in August 2025. Within this category:

• Mini segment (Alto, S-Presso) production increased to 9,890 units from 9,485 units.
• Compact segment (Baleno, Celerio, Dzire, Ignis, Swift, WagonR, OEM Model) production rose to 97,510 units from 75,923 units.

Vans, represented by the Eeco model, saw production rise to 12,559 units from 11,243 units. Light Commercial Vehicles, specifically the Super Carry, recorded production of 3,732 units, up from 2,964 units.

What the Numbers Show

Utility Vehicles contributed significantly to the overall volume expansion. With production jumping by nearly 40,000 units year-on-year in this segment alone, it indicates strong demand or supply normalization for SUVs and MPVs relative to the passenger car segment, which grew by approximately 22,000 units.

Maruti Suzuki reported total sales of 219,220 units in August 2026, marking a 21% rise YoY from 180,683 units in the same period last year. The company also surpassed the milestone of 1 million units in total sales within the first five months of FY 2026-27.

Despite the year-on-year improvement, August sales came in below the analyst estimate of 245,000 units, indicating a miss against market expectations.

YTD performance

In the first five months of FY 2026-27 (April-August), total sales reached 1,143,365 units, compared to 889,070 units in the corresponding period of FY 2025-26. This represents a significant volume expansion year-to-date.

What the numbers show

The 21% YoY growth in total sales reflects a meaningful volume recovery compared to the prior year period. However, the shortfall of approximately 25,780 units against the analyst estimate of 245,000 units points to a gap between actual performance and market expectations for the month. The achievement of over 1 million units in just five months highlights strong cumulative demand despite the single-month miss.
