Maruti Suzuki launches India's first flex-fuel Wagon R

Maruti Suzuki launched India's first flex-fuel car, the Wagon R, in New Delhi on June 04, 2026. The launch took place in the presence of Shri Nitin Gadkari, Hon’ble Minister of Road Transport and Highways, and Shri Hardeep Singh Puri, Hon’ble Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas. This initiative aligns with the national vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat and aims to reduce dependence on crude oil imports while boosting farmer income through the promotion of ethanol.

Technology and Specifications

The flex-fuel Wagon R is engineered to run on any blend of ethanol and petrol ranging from E20 to E100. While the vehicle is compatible with E100 fuel as defined in IS17821:2022, it is homologated with E85 fuel in accordance with Central Motor Vehicle Rules, 1989 (CMVR) GSR 27(E). The car features advanced ECU calibration designed to seamlessly adapt to varying ethanol blends.

Maruti Suzuki India Limited achieved its highest-ever monthly sales volume of 242,688 units in May 2026, marking a significant milestone for the automaker. Domestic sales also reached an all-time high of 193,535 units, driven by strong demand across passenger vehicle segments. The company reported sales to other OEM at 7,239 units, while exports surged to 41,914 units for the month.

Sales Performance by Segment

The Utility Vehicles segment led the growth with sales of 79,267 units, compared to 54,899 units in May 2025. The Compact and Mid-Size segment, comprising models such as Baleno, Swift, and WagonR, recorded sales of 81,555 units, up from 61,960 units in the previous year. The Mini segment, including Alto and S-Presso, sold 16,275 units, while the Vans segment, represented by Eeco, posted sales of 13,240 units.
