Chinese President Xi Jinping and Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov signed more than 20 cooperation agreements during a state visit to Bishkek on Monday. The deals cover science, technology, education, and investment, marking a new phase in bilateral relations.

The visit coincided with the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit 2026 and the 35th anniversary of Kyrgyzstan's independence. Both leaders described the relationship as entering a "golden period" of rapid development.

China remains Kyrgyzstan's largest trading partner and primary source of foreign direct investment. Bilateral trade reached $27.2 billion in 2025, up 19.8% year on year. This momentum continued into 2026, with trade volume hitting $11.7 billion in the first seven months.

Exports of "new three" products — electric vehicles, lithium-ion batteries, and photovoltaic products — drove growth alongside mechanical and electrical goods. Chinese direct investment across all sectors exceeded $2 billion by the end of July 2026.

Xi stated that such major cooperation projects provide effective support for regional peace, stability, and prosperity.

Other progressing projects include oil refining, photovoltaic power generation, waste-to-energy plants, and wastewater treatment facilities. More than 10 road projects have been built or renovated to improve transportation connectivity.

Multilateral Coordination

The two nations aligned their positions on multilateral platforms including the United Nations, the SCO, and the China-Central Asia mechanism. China supported Kyrgyzstan's election as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council in June. Kyrgyzstan joined the World Artificial Intelligence Cooperation Organization (WAICO) and the International Organization for Mediation.

The heads of state also signed a joint declaration on high-quality development of their comprehensive strategic partnership and a bilateral treaty on permanent good-neighborliness. Japarov called China "Kyrgyzstan's closest friend and most reliable partner."
