VIAVI Solutions has been awarded $1.1M from the European Smart Networks and Services Joint Undertaking and Horizon Europe to advance the SHIELD-6G project. The funding supports the development of a comprehensive AI-driven Cyber Threat Intelligence (CTI) platform designed to secure 6G networks through interoperable security, orchestration, and regulatory compliance. This initiative addresses the escalating volume of telecom breaches and the looming threat of quantum-enabled cyberattacks.

Project Scope and Technology

The SHIELD-6G project focuses on building security measures into 6G networks before commercial deployment. VIAVI will leverage its TeraVM AI RAN Scenario Generator (RSG) to develop digital twins. These digital twins enable the creation, testing, and validation of AI-driven security models ahead of the first commercial 6G signal going live.

VIAVI's AI RSG technology will support advanced security testing by simulating, detecting, and analyzing potential threats across 6G network environments. The technology generates realistic network datasets that facilitate intelligent anomaly detection and the continuous refinement of AI-based security mechanisms. This process ensures that vulnerabilities are identified and addressed before they can be exploited in live networks.

Strategic Collaboration

SHIELD-6G is part of the competitive Horizon Europe SNS JU call, which selected 20 new 6G projects to accelerate research and innovation. VIAVI joins a European consortium coordinated by University College Dublin. The collaboration includes global industry leaders such as Ericsson, Nokia, THALES & THALES SIX, and network operators Telefónica and LMT of Latvia.
