TVS Motor Company (TVSM) has launched the TVS iQube premium electric scooter in Kenya, marking its first entry into the African market. The launch represents a strategic expansion into a region where the electric two-wheeler segment is forecast to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 15-25% through 2030-31, significantly outpacing the overall two-wheeler market’s projected 7-10% CAGR.
Peyman Kargar, President of International Business at TVS Motor Company, described the launch as a key milestone in the company’s growth journey and a reflection of its focus on expanding innovative electric solutions across international markets. Vijay Gidoomal, CEO of Car & General, noted that while overall market growth is steady, the runway for electric vehicle (EV) penetration remains extremely long given current low adoption rates relative to industry size.
Product Specifications
The TVS iQube is available in two variants: the TVS iQube 3.5 and the TVS iQube 2.2. Global Impact Metrics
The launch builds on the model’s existing global footprint. To date, the TVS iQube has been sold to over 1 million customers worldwide. These vehicles have collectively traveled more than 17.81 billion kilometres, helping avoid 6,23,595 tonnes of CO₂ emissions. The company equates this environmental impact to planting 25 million trees.
What the Numbers Show
The divergence between the projected CAGR for the overall African two-wheeler market (7-10%) and the electric segment (15-25%) highlights a structural shift in demand. By entering with a premium product rather than an entry-level model, TVS Motor is targeting the faster-growing upper tier of this expanding market, leveraging its established global scale to capture early market share in a region with low current EV penetration.
How will TVS Motor plan to address the current lack of charging infrastructure in Kenya to support the 15-25% projected growth of the electric two-wheeler segment?
What specific strategies will TVS employ to compete with local manufacturers and Chinese EV brands that typically dominate the entry-level price segments in African markets?
Given the premium positioning of the iQube, how might this launch influence consumer perception and adoption rates for electric vehicles among middle-income earners in East Africa?
