Kingsoft Cloud Holdings Ltd (NASDAQ: KC; HKEX: 3896) reported a 33.7% year-over-year revenue increase to 5.78 billion yuan ($858 million) for the first half of 2026. The company’s net loss narrowed significantly by 43.4% to 437 million yuan, reflecting improved operational efficiency amid aggressive expansion into AI cloud services.
The results mark the first financial report under new leadership, following the resignation of former non-executive chairman Lei Jun and his succession by CEO Zou Tao earlier this year. Under Zou’s tenure, the company has pivoted from low-margin content delivery network (CDN) services toward higher-value AI infrastructure.
Revenue Growth Driven by AI Cloud
Public cloud services emerged as the primary growth engine, with revenue reaching 4.35 billion yuan, up 46.2% year-on-year. This surge was attributed to strong demand for intelligent computing cloud services.
The AI business segment showed particular momentum, with revenue growing 90% in the first quarter of 2026 compared to the prior year period. By Q1 2026, AI-related services accounted for more than half of the company’s total public cloud revenue, up from 926 million yuan in the fourth quarter of 2025, which was nearly double the year-ago figure.
Sequentially, revenue rose 13.7% in the second quarter compared to the first, while the net loss contracted sharply by 72% over the same period.
Rising Capital Expenditure Pressure
Despite top-line growth, Kingsoft Cloud faces intensifying capital expenditure pressures inherent to AI infrastructure development. Capital expenditures and leased assets totaled 6.24 billion yuan in H1 2026, a 26% increase from 4.95 billion yuan in the same period last year.
Depreciation and amortization costs nearly doubled to 1.78 billion yuan from 930 million yuan in H1 2025. This sharp rise in non-cash charges underscores the heavy investment required to maintain competitive AI capabilities, contrasting with the deeper pockets of larger peers like Alibaba Cloud and Tencent Cloud.
What the Numbers Show
A notable divergence exists between revenue concentration and customer dependency. While public cloud revenue grew robustly, affiliated entities Xiaomi and Kingsoft Corp contributed roughly 30% of total revenue over the past three quarters. This reliance on related parties presents a structural risk, as any scaling back of business from these key clients could disproportionately impact overall performance.
Competitive Landscape Challenges
Kingsoft Cloud operates in a fiercely contested market. According to Omdia, Alibaba Cloud holds 38.1% of China’s AI cloud market, followed by Volcano Engine at 20.4%. Baidu Cloud, Tencent Cloud, and Tianyi Cloud occupy the remaining top-five positions.
Kingsoft Cloud failed to enter the top five, positioning it in the second tier of providers. This lower market share implies higher relative costs as a percentage of sales compared to larger competitors, complicating the path to sustained profitability despite the narrowing losses.
How might Kingsoft Cloud's heavy reliance on affiliated entities like Xiaomi and Kingsoft Corp impact its ability to attract independent enterprise clients in the competitive AI cloud market?
Given the significant capital expenditure pressure, what specific financing strategies or cost-optimization measures is CEO Zou Tao planning to implement to achieve sustained profitability?
How does Kingsoft Cloud intend to differentiate its AI infrastructure offerings against top-tier competitors like Alibaba Cloud and Tencent Cloud to overcome its second-tier market position?
