The Bezos Earth Fund has committed $26 million to the non-profit Earth Fire Alliance and its FireSat program, marking the largest single philanthropic grant dedicated to wildfire detection to date. This investment will fund the launch and operations of the first three operational FireSat satellites scheduled for orbit this summer. The initiative aims to address the increasing impact of wildfires on communities and ecosystems by providing advanced detection capabilities.

The initial three satellites will provide wildfire monitoring at least twice daily over critical geographies, with a specific focus on the Amazon Basin. By 2029, the FireSat constellation is expected to detect fires as small as 15 feet by 15 feet anywhere on the planet within one hour. Once fully operational in the early 2030s with approximately 50 satellites, the system will monitor every point on Earth every 20 minutes or less. This technology has the potential to reduce carbon dioxide emissions from wildfires by up to 5–10% annually.

FireSat represents a significant advancement in wildfire detection technology. Developed by space systems company Muon Space for the Earth Fire Alliance, the constellation uses advanced infrared satellites to detect fires as small as a beach bonfire within minutes of ignition. The system delivers high-resolution data to fire agencies and scientists in near real-time, enabling faster response times.

Key Project Milestones

Fire agencies and scientific organizations worldwide have partnered with the Earth Fire Alliance through its Early Adopter program to utilize FireSat's data. Participants include leading fire organizations in the United States, specifically California, Colorado, Oregon, and Texas, as well as entities in Africa, Australia, and Portugal. This early adoption reflects the urgent demand for faster, more reliable fire data.

She emphasized that the investment aims to safeguard communities, preserve nature, and ensure future generations inherit a resilient world.
