Lam Research Corp. (NASDAQ: LRCX) announced Thursday it plans to invest more than $3 billion over the next five years to expand its global research and development (R&D) lab network. The company stated the multi-site expansion is expected to add infrastructure and capabilities that will increase experiment capacity by more than 50%.
The investment targets the enhancement of specialized labs worldwide, situated across the U.S., Asia, and Europe. These labs already handle more than one million experiments annually. Lam noted that its approach includes deep customer collaboration with locations situated near customer facilities, operating as an integrated 24/7 network to enable innovation in parallel and at scale.
Strategic Objectives for AI Era Chips
With this investment, Lam intends to further compress product development cycles for customers, ranging from pathfinding to fab deployment. The expansion focuses on increasing physical experiment capacity rather than solely digital simulation, allowing for faster validation of semiconductor manufacturing processes.
CEO Tim Archer said the pace of innovation is relentless in the AI era, requiring chips with new architectures and complex features engineered with nanoscale precision. He added that faster R&D has become a decisive advantage.
Lam said the investment is designed to compress the time it takes to move new chip technologies from early research to production. Some customer engagements have already shortened process development by up to 2.5 times.
