AECOM has been appointed by Murphy as the exclusive design partner to deliver Thames Water’s £340 million upgrade of the Oxford Sewage Treatment Works in the UK. The project aims to increase treatment capacity by approximately 40% to support population growth and protect the environment by improving effluent quality discharged into the River Thames. This scheme is a key component of Thames Water’s capital delivery works program during AMP8, the UK’s current Asset Management Period 8.
The upgrade includes enhancing power supplies and increasing storm tank capacity and sewage treatment flows. AECOM will provide multidisciplinary design services as the contractor’s exclusive design partner. The initiative is designed to ensure long-term resilience and environmental performance of the wastewater network for communities in Oxfordshire.
"Upgrading these major sewage treatment works is critical for facilitating growth and protecting the environment for communities in Oxfordshire," said Beverley Stinson, chief executive of AECOM’s global Water business. She highlighted the firm's status as the world’s number one water design firm as ranked by Engineering News-Record and emphasized the use of AI-enabled solutions for efficient infrastructure.
Richard Whitehead, chief executive of AECOM’s Europe and India region, noted that the award reinforces the company's longstanding relationship with Thames Water. He expressed confidence that the collaboration with Murphy would bring together the necessary skills to enhance services for customers and deliver cleaner waterways.
David Mayfield, Senior Project Manager at Thames Water, described the upgrade as a significant investment in future-ready treatment facilities. He stated that working with AECOM and Murphy would ensure fewer storm overflows and a resilient wastewater service for growing communities in the region.
AECOM previously delivered the Deephams Sewage Treatment Works upgrade in a joint venture with Murphy and Kier. This new contract builds on AECOM's recent wins related to the AMP8 UK water infrastructure framework, including supporting Thames Water’s approximately $540 million professional services framework and Southern Water’s $4.8 billion capital delivery program.
How might the successful completion of the Oxford Sewage Treatment Works upgrade influence AECOM's ability to secure further contracts within the AMP8 framework?
What role will AI-enabled solutions play in optimizing the operational efficiency and environmental performance of the upgraded facility?
Could this collaboration between AECOM and Murphy set a precedent for future partnerships in other UK water infrastructure projects?
