IndiGo Receives Six-Month Extension to Operate Turkish Airlines Boeing 777s Until February 2026

2 days agoIndiGo has received a six-month extension from DGCA to continue operating two Boeing 777 aircraft wet-leased from Turkish Airlines until February 28, 2026. The previous three-month approval granted on May 30, 2025, was set to expire on August 31, with DGCA initially stating it would be the final extension. IndiGo called the approval crucial amid geopolitical headwinds and said it will help mitigate losses to Indian aviation due to geopolitical restrictions while benefiting travelers during peak travel season by ensuring direct connectivity to Istanbul. The airline began operating the Turkish Boeing 777s on the Delhi-Istanbul route in February 2023 and has received multiple short-term extensions since late 2023. IndiGo has also leased six Boeing 787s from Norse Atlantic and ordered 60 Airbus A350s, though A350 deliveries have not yet commenced. The extension highlights IndiGo's continued reliance on the Turkish aircraft for international operations amid strong long-haul travel demand and limited availability of its own widebody fleet.
Rakesh Gangwal's family trust sold a 1.3% stake in IndiGo for Rs 2,933 crore through open market transactions. The Chinkerpoo Family Trust offloaded 50.40 lakh shares at Rs 5,814.71-5,825.72 per share. This brings total divestments by Gangwal and family to Rs 39,532.79 crore since beginning their stake reduction. The family trust's holding decreased to 1.78% from 3.08%, while combined Gangwal family shareholding dropped to 6.51% from 7.81%. Since 2022, the Gangwals have sold a 28.32% stake in IndiGo following Rakesh Gangwal's decision to gradually reduce his equity stake over five years after differences with co-founder Rahul Bhatia. InterGlobe Aviation shares declined 5.22% to close at Rs 5,734. IndiGo operates over 65% of domestic air traffic in India.
The Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA) has approved IndiGo's request to extend the lease of two Boeing 777 aircraft from Turkish Airlines. The approval allows the airline to continue operating these wide-body aircraft under the extended lease arrangement.

InterGlobe Aviation Limited, incorporated in 2006, operates IndiGo, India's largest airline. IndiGo primarily serves India's domestic air travel market as a low-cost carrier, offering passenger and cargo services along with related allied services. The airline operates over 1,800 daily flights to 78 domestic and 26 international destinations. As of March 31, 2023, IndiGo's fleet consists of 304 aircraft, including Airbus A320neo, A321neo, A320ceo, ATR, A321 Freighters, and a leased Boeing 777. The company has a wholly-owned subsidiary, Agile Airport Services Private Limited, which provides ground handling services at various Indian airports.
